Why do Baha’is fast for 19 days?
We followers of Orthodox Baha’i Faith fast for 19 days in the month of ‘Ala’.
We have 19 months, and each month has 19 days. Hence fasting is for 19 days.
Baháʼu'lláh established the guidelines of the fast in the Kitáb-i-Aqdas, his book of laws. Fasting is observed from sunrise to sunset during the Baháʼí month of ʻAlaʼ and it is the complete abstention from food, and drink similar to Muslim practice of fasting for a month.
Observing the fast is an individual obligation and is binding on all Baháʼís who have reached the age 15 until the age of 70. Exemptions are given to the sick, the travelling, and few others.
Misuse of exemptions and non-fasting is very common amongst the followers of Sans Guardian group who take undue exemptions from the false UHJ to avoid fasting.
